Steps to getting married: It is not necessary to get a marriage license in order to get your Marriage Certificate in the Dominican Republic. The first step towards getting your Marriage Certificate is that you register to be married with the Oficialia del Estado Civil (City Clerk). They will charge you a nominal fee for this registration. The following is the paperwork that must be submitted in order for them to register you. To ensure these important documents are not lost in the mail, yet speed up the paperwork process, you can send the Oficialia del Estado Civil photocopies of these documents in advance and produce the originals when you arrive: * Passports You will be required to have two witnesses to your marriage, besides the person who will perform your marriage ceremony. If these witnesses are not Dominican Republic residents, they will require Passports to verify their identity. If the witnesses are Dominican residents, they will require Cedulas (Dominican Republic identification cards) to verify their identity. Civil Ceremonies Once the marriage takes place, the Justice of the Peace that performs your Civil Ceremony will need to provide documentation proving the marriage was performed to the Oficialia del Estado Civil . The Oficialia del Estado Civil will then issue you a Marriage Certificate that is legal everywhere in the world. Religious Ceremonies Religious Ceremonies have more formalities than Civil Ceremonies. If you desire to marry at a church or synagogue, it may be wise to get our Wedding Planner to make the arrangements. You will have to fulfill all of the Civil Ceremony requirements, as well as some other formalities particular to the church or synagogue. For example, if you want a Catholic marriage and would like to marry at a Dominican Roman Catholic Church, your Archbishop may need to request permission from the Archbishop of the Diocese where you would like to marry in the Dominican Republic. A Religious marriage has the same legal implications as a Civil marriage. In a Religious marriage, the Parish Priest or Rabi must send a copy of the marriage documentation to the Oficialia del Estado Civil within three days of the marriage, so that it may be registered. If a Civil marriage has been performed prior to the Religious Ceremony, the Parish Priest or Rabi must still send a copy of this documentation to be registered. The Oficialia del Estado Civil will then issue you a Marriage Certificate that will be legal anywhere in the world.
