Horseback riding in Cabarete is one of those can’t-miss activities while on your vacation. There is no better way to see the beauty of the Dominican Republic and its coastline, culture, and landscapes. Here’s what you need to know before your adventure:
What to wear
Right from our beautiful backyard, we arrange for gorgeous and well-kept horses to pick you up. You will be given a helmet for safety. We recommend wearing long pants and socks as well as closed toe shoes to avoid any abrasion with the stirrups. You can wear any top. We even see people go shirtless or in a bikini a la warrior, this, of course, is up to you.
The tour guides will tell you the horses name and temperament and teach you how to mount onto their backs. Everything you need to know about how to signal to the animal when you want to go faster or slower, left or right, will be explained to you. The horses are very well trained and they know which path to take so you don’t need to worry about doing much handling. Also, guides are at the front and back of the pack to make sure everyone stays on course and is safe.
It is important when on a horse to practice proper posture. Sit tall, yet relaxed and don’t forget to breathe. You need to use your muscles and posture to stay mounted. When you put your feet in the stirrups, your guide will adjust them to your height for you, after that make sure you have your heels down and point your toes out.
Beach or Mountain Path
You have two choices as for which kind of path you want to be taken on: the coast, or through the mountains. The mountain path requires a bit of planning because it is a much longer ride and can only be done in the mornings when it’s not so hot. The beach path is most popular since you can enjoy it any time of day. A lot of the trek takes you through the shady mangroves along the beach, and you get to gallop on the sand which is a unique experience.
If you are a more experienced rider, you can let the trainers know so they can lead you on a gallop on the beach. As a beginner, you may want to try increasing speed just to experience the power of a horse, just make sure you do this with the permission and guidance of the guides.
When on a fast gallop on the beach you’ll notice the horses know where they like to step, they tend not to like the deep sand when going fast, so they’ll go slower there or lead you to where it’s easier for them to keep the pace you’re asking for.
The benefits of horseback riding are fascinating. We looked into it a bit for you and found that physically, it is great for your core, pelvic strength, and inner thigh strength which do the bulk of the balancing. Mentally, being on a horse is very meditative. When riding you must focus on balance, and the actual ride, which will clear your mind of the many other distractions you might think up on a regular day. On a slightly spiritual level, horses are very intuitive creatures and pick up on the slightest amount of tension. They are very connected to their rider, and a lot of people say they feel connected to their horses while they ride, too.The Dominican Republic is a beautiful paradise with lots to see. Most of our coastlines look untouched making horseback riding one of the best ways to experience the landscapes in Cabarete.
